The Central Museum Indore was established in 1923 as an institution under the Education Department of the Holkar Government, named ‘Nararatna Temple’. Holkar king Tukojirao III was ruling in Indore at this time. The main objective of this organization was to collect pictures, photographs and documents related to the character of great men.

The main objective of this organization was to collect pictures, photographs and documents related to the character of great men. There was also a library in this institution and then it was operated on the MG Road, where present-day Devlalikar Gallery is there.

The museum has very ancient information about the idols of Parmar era. These Parmar idols originated in Indore and apart from them, the Indore Museum also has a collection of many rich and varied idols of Hindu and Jainism. A large collection of prehistoric artefacts, coins, weapons, mythological carvings etc. are found in the museum.

Why This Museum is Known as “Central Museum”

The Indore Museum Indore was established in 1923 as an institution under the Education Department of the Holkar Government, named ‘Nararatna Temple’.

When the items were being compiled by the said institution, it was decided to set up a museum to keep them safe by looking at the collection of artefacts and antiquities has gone through various changes according to museology and choice of the common people. And in 1929 the museum was established in this building and by the Naraina temple. The compiled objects were merged into the museum. The museum was called the Central Museum because it was established in the centre (capital) of Holkar state.

In other words, on account of its position at the centre of Holkar State, the museum was declared as Central Museum. In 1965, the museum was shifted in the present building.

History Of Central Museum

The Central Museum Indore was established in 1923 as an institution under the Education Department of the Holkar Government, named ‘Nararatna Temple’. In view of the collection of antiquities lying in the state, it was decided to establish a museum to keep them safe and the museum was established in this building in 1929.

On account of its position at the centre of Holkar State the museum was declared as Central Museum. In 1965, the museum was shifted in the present building.

In 1975, the currencies were displayed in the museum, which was named “Devi Ahilya Mudra Vithika”. Selected artworks from 1977 were brought to the museum after Hinglajgarh’s statues were unearthed at Hinglajgarh in Mandsaur district and a new gallery was constructed in 1980 as the Hinglajgarh Art Gallery.

Index Gallery & Display Hall

This hall is used for exhibitions on various occasions. There are models of some remarkable architectural edifices of Madhya Pradesh. In addition, miniature stone sculptures, art and adorned antiques have been displayed in some showcases. But the main collection is of Hinglajgarh. The statues of Saiva, Shakta, Vaishnava, Jain and Buddhism have been collected from this place and displayed in the museum. The important sculptures are of Dashavatara, Siva and Siva-family, Dikpalas, Surya, Parvati, Lakshmi, Saptamatrika, Jaina Yaksha-Yakshis, Nayak-Nayikas, and some Buddha figures. These sculptures are datable from 4th -5th century AD to 18th century AD.

Antiquity gallery

This gallery is a highly enlightening gallery, which showcases the origin of the earth, the saga of human development and the tools used by it in various periods. The original archaeological material from the Mohenjodaro excavation of the Sindhughati civilization is also on display here, which was sent to this museum by the Custodian Mohenjodaro for display in 1936-1937.

The pottery, terracotta, bead, bangles and other materials obtained from the excavation sites of Tamrasyugin excavations of Madhya Pradesh like Kayatha, Arawa, Nawadatoli, Dangwara, Azad Nagar, Kheda, Pagara and Kasrawad have been displayed.

Coin Gallery

This gallery is displayed with the story of the origin of the coins after the important coins in chronological order. Prominent among these are the hurt currency, district currency, Ujjaini coins, Kushan, Kshatrap, Nag, Vallabhi, Roman, Indo Sasanian and Gadhaiya coins, Gupta, Kulchuri, Parmar, Delhi Sultan, Malwa Sultan, Mughal, Variable Mughal and Holkar currencies. Dyeing of the symbols to be inscribed on the coins is also displayed in the gallery.

Weapons Gallery

Maratha, Rajput, Mughal and British weapons have been displayed in this gallery, showing how the development of weapons from the earliest times. Prominent among them are the sword, shield, dagger, khocha, gupti etc. Various types of guns such as Flintlac, Mechlac, Jajail, pistol, revolver, hunting gun, pen pistol etc. are displayed here. Cannon and cannon moulds are also displayed in the gallery.

Italian & Contemporary Gallery

This gallery is composed of marble – artefacts, ivory-vase, decorated plate, trunk, metal images and medals of Bhopal & Indore States.
