Mahakaleshwar Ujjain
Indore has many places to visit the places. Indore is also famous for the temples. Mahakaleshwar Temple is also of them. And this temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga.
Mahakaleshwar temple is situated in the Ujjain, which is 60km far from the Indore. This temple is situated on the bank of the holy river Kshipra. This temple has great importance because of being self-proclaimed, grand and south-facing, Mahakaleshwar Mahadev is of great virtue. It is believed that salvation is attained only by its philosophy. There is a rush of the devotees.
The Tropic Cancer has passed through the peak of the temple so that it also consider to be the navel(नाभिस्थल) of the earth.
The creation of this temple or jyotirlinga
The Jyotirlinga was created by the first 12 rays of the Lord Sun fell on the earth when the universe is created by the Lord Bramha. The whole land of the Ujjain is a Usar Bhoomi or crematorium. This is the reason that Ujjain temple is important as a point of the tantra mantra sadhana.
Why is Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga of Ujjain called Mahakal?
Kaala has two meanings in the scriptures, first time and second death. It is believed that this is the place where the time of the whole world was determined in ancient times. According to mythology, Lord Shiva’s lingam was established here by King Chandrasen and Gop Balak.
According to the mythology book “Shiva Purana”, once Brahma and Lord Vishnu started arguing about the importance of creation. To test them, Shivji divided the type of Pillar, Jyotirlinga into three parts. Lord Vishnu and Brahma shared their paths from below and from side to side respectively to know the end of the light. After this, Brahma swung that he found the end, while Lord Vishnu accepted his defeat.
At that time, Shiva appeared from the second pillar and cursed Brahma that Brahma would not find any place in divine worship whereas people would always worship Lord Vishnu.
According to mythology, Raja Chandrasena was the king in Ujjayini. He was a devotee of Lord Shiva. A king named Manibhadrak was a friend of the King Chandrasena. king Manibhadrak gives a Chintamani as a gift to the king Chandrasena. This Chintamani was so beautiful and the king Chandrasena wear this Chintamani into his neck after that he increased his worth and fame in other countries. By seeing his name and fame other countries kings get jealous and want Chintamani. All the kings attacked the king Chandrasena, at the same time King Chandrasena meditate to the lord Shiva. He brought a stone from somewhere and established it into his house and worship. After some time he absorbed in devotion. His mother calling him but he did not answer him and mother calling again and again. His Mother gets angered and throw all the things of worship even stone. The son is very sad to see his destroyed his worship. A grand and beautiful temple was built by Lord Shiva. The divine Shivling was seated in the centre of the temple.
When King Chandrasen came to know about this incident, he also went to meet that Shiva devotee child. Along with King Chandrasen, other kings also reached there. Everyone asked King Chandrasen for the forgiveness of their crime and all together started worshipping Lord Mahakal.
Importance of Basam Aarti
The whole land of the Ujjain is a Usar Bhoomi or crematorium. This is the reason that Ujjain temple is important as a point of the tantra mantra sadhana. Mahakal of Ujjain, Lord Mahakal is adorned with the consumption of fresh dead (Basam). And this aarti is done in the morning at 4 o’clock.
According to the shivpuran, “bhasam” is an essence of the universe. One day we all are transformed into this ash. And the Lord Shiv is an essence of Salvation. Among 12 jyotirlingas, this jyotirlinga is the only place where bhasma aarti is performed because here the Aghori form of Shiva is given the highest importance.
Important facts about the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
Presently there are three sections of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, out of which Mahakaleshwar in the lower section, Omkareshwar in the middle section and Sri Nagchandreshwar Temple in the upper section. Of these, darshan of Nagachandreshwar Shivling can be done once a year on the day of Nag Panchami.
Mahakal Is only one a king Of Ujjain
According to the old story no king is stay a night in the Ujjain if any of the kings stay in Ujjain, he has to lose his kingdom. This is because the king of the Ujjain is only Mahakal. Therefore the Prime Minister or Chief Minister or any Higher post person did not stay in Ujjain city.

How to reach Ujjain From Indore
You can reach Ujjain via bus and train both. The only 60km is the distance between Ujjain and Indore. You can also book a cab. You have to take the MR10 road to reach the Ujjain.
